The Franciscan Story

Details have always mattered.

For over 40 years, Franciscan winemakers have sourced our remarkable grapes from some of the best vineyards in California, crafting lots slowly and carefully for fuller body with unmistakable character. We chase a perfection we think every glass of Franciscan deserves, and we will continue to do so in each batch and bottle to come.

We make two different collections of wines. The first, our Exclusive Wine Collection is made in small lots, showcasing the specific beauty and terroir of the famed Napa Valley, and is available only from the winery directly. The second, our Favorite Wine Collection, reveals the beautiful expressions of both Napa and Monterey appellations. But no matter which you choose, you’re in for a treat. All of our wines are made with the utmost care and attention to detail.

Our appellations

Most Franciscan fruit comes from the southern half of the Napa Valley and from Monterey County, both of which lend a brightness and freshness to the fruit. The clay and gravel soil in these counties brings about grapes with unrivaled structure and minerality.

Our White Wine

“Napa Valley offers minerality, ripe pear and apple fruit, and rich body coming from the Carneros and southern Napa Valley areas. Monterey offers bright tropical notes, freshness, and elegance on the palate. Bringing them together is a beautiful interpretation of the possibilities in California winemaking.”

—Janet Myers, Director of Winemaking

Our Red Wine

“We source our grapes from Napa Valley’s renowned Oakville, Rutherford, and Oak Knoll Districts. Only the finest lots showcasing richness, body, and character are included in each bottle of Franciscan Cabernet Sauvignon.”

—Janet Myers, Director of Winemaking

Where we come from

Franciscan was founded in 1973 by two early Napa Valley pioneers, Justin Meyer and Raymond Duncan. They began with an inaugural vintage of Cabernet Sauvignon in 1975, and Cabernet remains the backbone of Franciscan to this day. Yet, over the years, we have also loved producing varietals such as Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Rosé, and Blends. We pride ourselves on pushing the envelope in our winemaking craft while recognizing the legacy of our rich heritage. Janet Myers has led this effort for the last 15 years, and her own love for Cabernet Sauvignon, along with her pure approach to Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc, will continue to guide Franciscan into the future.

Who we are today

Today, our winemakers continue to create wines of great character.

Janet Myers

Wine wasn't Janet's original path. After interrupting her pursuit of a PhD in Biological Anthropology, she moved to London where she lived above a wine shop, often sampling her neighbor’s wares. "When I realized winemaking combined science and agriculture, I enrolled at UC Davis and haven't looked back."

Her first harvest was at Robert Mondavi Winery in Napa Valley. After graduating from UC Davis with a master's in Enology, she interned at Antinori in Chianti, Italy. Before coming to Franciscan in 2003 as Associate Winemaker, Janet worked in Australia's Margaret River region and at big Cabernet producers Beaulieu, Stag's Leap, and Louis Martini. Janet was promoted to Director of Winemaking of Franciscan and Mount Veeder Winery in August 2005 and has been leading the team to new heights ever since.
