The Franciscan Story

Details have always mattered.

For over 40 years, Franciscan winemakers have sourced our remarkable grapes from some of the best vineyards in California, crafting lots slowly and carefully for fuller body with unmistakable character. We chase a perfection we think every glass of Franciscan deserves, and we will continue to do so in each batch and bottle to come.

We make two different collections of wines. The first, our Exclusive Wine Collection is made in small lots, showcasing the specific beauty and terroir of the famed Napa Valley, and is available only from the winery directly. The second, our Favorite Wine Collection, reveals the beautiful expressions of both Napa and Monterey appellations. But no matter which you choose, you’re in for a treat. All of our wines are made with the utmost care and attention to detail.

Our appellations

Most Franciscan fruit comes from the southern half of the Napa and Monterey Counties, both of which lend a brightness and freshness to the fruit. The clay and gravel soil in these counties brings about grapes with unrivaled structure and minerality.

Our White Wine

“Napa County offers minerality, ripe pear and apple fruit, and rich body coming from the Carneros and southern Napa Valley areas. Monterey offers bright tropical notes, freshness, and elegance on the palate. Bringing them together is a beautiful interpretation of the possibilities in California winemaking.”

—Yamil Sales, Director of Winemaking

Our Red Wine

“We source our grapes from Napa’s renowned Oakville, Rutherford, and Oak Knoll Districts. Only the finest lots showcasing richness, body, and character are included in each bottle of Franciscan Cabernet Sauvignon.”

—Yamil Sales, Director of Winemaking

Where we come from

Franciscan was founded in 1973 by two early Napa Valley pioneers, Justin Meyer and Raymond Duncan. They began with an inaugural vintage of Cabernet Sauvignon in 1975, and Cabernet remains the backbone of Franciscan to this day. Yet, over the years, we have also loved producing varietals such as Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Rosé, and Blends. We pride ourselves on pushing the envelope in our winemaking craft while recognizing the legacy of our rich heritage.

Who we are today

Today, our winemakers continue to create wines of great character.

Yamil Sales

“Wine is an important part of people’s day-to-day life and making it for them is a privilege.” This privilege is what drives our winemaker's passion for his craft. And being able to put the best of two regions -- Napa and Monterey counties -- into each wine drives his passion for Franciscan.

Yamil, a native of Mendoza, Argentina, earned his Bachelor’s degrees in winemaking and viticulture as well as food science at Don Bosco University. After graduating, Yamil expored the winemaking world, working in New Zealand, France, South Africa, Chile, and the United States. He has worked with several renowned California wineries in Sonoma and Monterey Counties. Yamil joined the Franciscan team during the 2017 harvest, excited to share his experiences across wine regions, and was promoted to Director of Winemaking in 2018.
