2013 Franciscan Estate Rosé Napa Valley
Pale strawberry rose in color with a delicate strawberry cream nose, hints of raspberry, candied red fruit and watermelon. Just a touch of vibrant, fresh spring flowers. Bright, crisp entry with juicy watermelon and white peach flavors followed with hints of strawberry and vanilla. Creamy, round and refreshing with a clean finish.
The 2013 vintage gave us near perfect growing conditions which led to an early harvest with the first grapes arriving at the winery on August 5th, 12 days ahead of 2012, and 25 days ahead of 2011. Spring conditions were warm and dry which led to an early bud break and very even set. Aside from one hot spell at the end of June, temperatures remained moderate throughout the spring and summer. With only 8 inches of rain from January through June, the vines had less green growth and an earlier turn to fruit development. Our Syrah for Rose was harvested in Oak Knoll and picked at the peak of ripeness on August 23rd and August 27th.
Our Rosé of Syrah is made with traditional Provencal techniques. The Syrah grapes are picked early in the season, at 21.5 Brix, much earlier than we would pick for making a traditional red. This gives it a white wine sensibility – light on its feet, with bright fruit and crisp mouthfeel. The grapes are gently pressed to delicately tint the juice to its desired hue, and then cold-fermented to give beautiful strawberry, watermelon and citrus flavors, with a hint of sweetness for a round, fruity palate. Equally beautiful and delicious, it will complement any table. ~ Janet Myers, Winemaker
