Vineyard Notes
2011 was another cool growing season. December was very wet, with January very dry and warm. La Niña brought more late-winter rains and spring showers through the end of June. The rainfall total for 2011 ended up at 125% of normal. Two weeks of summer heat at the end of September led to the harvest of the first Bordeaux reds from our Oakville Estate Vineyard on October 3. With an impending rain event, our vineyard crew worked to open up the canopy with leaf removal for air flow and sun exposure in early October. For the last three weeks of October, the skies cleared and the sun came out for a fantastic long stretch of dry weather. The rain and cool weather of early October paused ripening, and the Indian summer got maturation rolling again. It was unseasonably warm on some days, even reaching 90°F in Oakville on October 23. The last Franciscan Oakville Estate Cabernet Sauvignon was picked on October 24. Our Oak Knoll Merlot ripens earlier and we began bringing in the perfectly ripened fruit on October 1 while Oakville Merlot came in about two weeks later starting on October 12.
Winemaker Notes
Magnificat is one of the original Meritage blends in California, a wine Franciscan Estate has proudly produced since 1985. Named for J.S. Bach’s masterpiece, it is crafted to be as seamless and harmonious as its musical namesake. Starting with over 200 small lots of red wine, Magnificat is created to showcase our finest Bordeaux blend of the vintage. Carefully assessing each lot as it ages in barrel, we create the blend with repeated trials and blind tastings. Depending on how the varieties express in a given year, the composition will be different, always shaped to provide consistency of style. The wine is founded on Cabernet Sauvignon, but true to Meritage, uses other Bordeaux varietals to give roundness, structure, and rich complexity.
