2011 Franciscan Estate Cabernet Sauvignon Oakville
96% Cabernet Sauvignon & 4% Malbec
Deep garnet in color, perfumed cherry, cassis, and cardamom spice woven with hints of fig and vanilla. Elegant and very smooth with ripe berry, chocolate, and cherries. Silky mouthfeel; seamless from start to finish with notes of violets and anise. A rich long finish of dark cherry and cassis.
2011 was another cool growing season. December was very wet, with January very dry and warm. La Niña brought more late-winter rains and spring showers through the end of June. The rainfall total for 2011 ended up at 125% of normal. Two weeks of summer heat at the end of September led to the harvest of the first Bordeaux reds off of our Oakville Estate Vineyard on October 3rd. With an impending rain event, our vineyard crew worked to open up the canopy with leaf removal for air flow and sun exposure in early October. For the last three weeks of October, the skies cleared and the sun came out for a fantastic long stretch of dry weather. The rain and cool weather of early October paused ripening, and the Indian summer got maturation rolling again. It was unseasonably warm on some days, even reaching 90°F in Oakville on October 23. The Cabernet Sauvignon harvest at our Oakville Estate began on October 12th, and was complete on October 24.
The Franciscan Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon showcases our Oakville roots, and our devotion to estate vineyard fruit and this venerable appellation. We have been producing Cabernet Sauvignon from our Oakville Estate since 1975. This bottling is an opportunity to craft a very limited, hand-selected blend from small lots of Cabernet Sauvignon showing textbook Oakville structure and body. A nice portion of Malbec adds deep color, plushy mouthfeel, and bright berry fruit notes. I love the combination of flavors and textures to create a powerful yet elegant wine. ~ Janet Myers, Winemaker
